Hi!
I hope you’re as curious about the latest food news as I am! 🍽️
Brace yourself, because the FDA in the United States has cleared lab-grown poultry for human consumption. While it may sound like a breakthrough, I urge you to pause before taking a bite.
Let’s be clear—I’m not here to rain on anyone’s parade or discredit scientific progress. However, when it comes to our plates, informed choices are key to our health and well-being. 💡🍎
What exactly is lab grown meat?
Briefly:
“Instead of raising live animals for their meat, to make artificial meat (also known as “slaughter-free meat,” “clean meat” or “cultured meat”), stem cells from an animal’s muscle tissue — known as a donor animal — are combined with a serum. The serum is usually derived from the fetuses of dead cows.
The cells are fed sugar and salts, tricking them into thinking they’re still in an animal — this way they grow.
Over time, the muscle stem cells begin transforming as they strengthen, expand and mature into muscle fibers. Eventually, when enough of these fibers combine, you have a piece of meat.
Fat tissue may then be added to give the meat a flavor more consistent with traditional meat. Then, it’s hello dinner.
Can vegetarians eat lab-grown meat? Because lab-grown meat still requires animal products, it’s not considered vegan or vegetarian-friendly. – Source.
Where is lab grown meat legal for human consumption?
In December 2020, Singapore made headlines by becoming the first country in the world to approve a cultured meat product for sale. Then came the USA in 2022, and as of July 5th, 2023, the Netherlands became the first EU country to allow the sale of lab grown meat.

USA, 2022
Netherlands, 2023
On the contrary, it looks like Italy may be the first country to ban lab grown meat (Go Italy!) – we will see.
Lab grown meat is not available for sale in Canada.
So, why should you think twice before embracing lab-grown meat? Allow me to shed some light on the matter.
While sellers of lab-grown meat are promoting it as a sustainable and ethical alternative to traditional meat, there are a few critical factors to consider.
Here’s why you should think twice about lab-grown meat:
🥩Quality and Nutritional Value: Lab-grown meat, also known as cultured meat, is created by culturing animal cells in a lab setting. This process often involves the use of synthetic growth factors, antibiotics, and other substances to mimic the growth of natural meat. The end result may not offer the same nutritional profile or quality as meat from naturally-raised animals.
🤔Unknown Long-Term Effects: The long-term impact of consuming lab-grown meat is still largely unknown. As humans, we have evolved to thrive on natural, whole foods. Introducing lab-grown alternatives into our diet may have unforeseen consequences for our health and well-being in the years to come.
🌿The Importance of Natural Variability: Natural meats are sourced from animals that have been raised in diverse environments, consuming varied diets. This natural variability contributes to the nutritional richness and complexity of the meat. In contrast, lab-grown meat lacks this natural diversity and may fall short in providing the same benefits to our health.
Now, what’s Dr. Josh Axe’s – a renowned expert in natural health and wellness – take on this?
