Hi!
Summer is one of the times that cravings for, and interest in, sugary sweets and beverages go way up.
Mocha Frapuchinos (iced coffee drinks), ice cream sundaes, iced tea, key lime or banana cream pie, ice cream cakes and ice cream sandwiches, strawberry trifle…the list goes on!
And, more and more, we are seeing zero calorie options available for everything, even in recipe guides.
So many of my Bermudian and American clients are hooked on artificial sweeteners before they start working with me.
It has been eye opening to see that so much interests in products like Splenda, NutraSweet, Equal and Sweet’N Low still exists.
So I wanted to address the dangers of artificial sweeteners on the gut, here in my newsletter, so that you go into your decision fully informed.
Although zero calorie sweeteners seem like such a great idea, they really are not.
The dangers on your gut, as highlighted by Dr. Josh Axe and Dave Asprey, include:
☑️Disruption of Gut Microbiome: Artificial sweeteners can negatively impact the delicate balance of gut bacteria, leading to dysbiosis. This imbalance may result in digestive issues, compromised immunity, and inflammation.
☑️Increased Risk of Metabolic Disorders: Consumption of artificial sweeteners has been linked to an increased risk of metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance, diabetes, and obesity. These conditions can further harm gut health.
☑️Heightened Sweet Cravings: Artificial sweeteners are much sweeter than natural sugars, potentially leading to heightened sweet cravings and a preference for unhealthy, sugary foods. This can negatively affect gut health by promoting the growth of harmful bacteria.
☑️Gut Barrier Dysfunction: Studies suggest that artificial sweeteners can disrupt the integrity of the gut barrier, making it more permeable to toxins and undigested food particles. This condition, known as leaky gut, can trigger inflammation and various health issues.
☑️Altered Appetite Regulation: Artificial sweeteners may interfere with the body’s ability to regulate appetite and satiety, potentially leading to overeating and weight gain, which can indirectly affect gut health.
☑️Digestive Disturbances: Some individuals may experience digestive discomfort, such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea, when consuming artificial sweeteners.
☑️Altered Gut Hormone Release: Artificial sweeteners can influence gut hormone secretion, which plays a crucial role in digestion and metabolism. These disruptions can have cascading effects on gut health.
☑️Impact on Gut-Brain Axis: Emerging research suggests that artificial sweeteners might affect the gut-brain axis, the communication system between the gut and brain. This disruption may have implications for mood, mental health, and overall well-being.
☑️Inflammatory Responses: Consumption of certain artificial sweeteners has been associated with increased levels of inflammatory markers in the body. Chronic inflammation can harm the gut lining and contribute to various health problems.
☑️Individual Sensitivities: While not everyone may experience adverse effects, some individuals may be more sensitive to artificial sweeteners, leading to pronounced gut disturbances and overall health issues.
It is just not worth it.
My recommendation to anyone wanting to sweeten up their coffee, tea or whatever it is, is to reach for some organic local honey or organic maple syrup.
Your gut, and all of the cells in your body, will thank you.
