If you’ve worked with me in 1:1 sessions, you’ll already know that alcohol is a Class 1 Carcinogen (it is linked to the creation of cancer cells in the body) and causes inflammation, damages the gut and liver and brain, and creates a type of bloating in the core that looks like abdominal fat, but isn’t actually fat (but makes you look fat). There’s more – dehydration, lack of motivation, depression, cravings, addiction, nutrient blocking, sexual mistakes, drunk driving, etc. – but you get the point. If you haven’t worked with me yet…spoiler alert! You really can’t discuss optimal nutrition and optimal health without looking at alcohol. I know, I know – Lots of doctors and nutrition experts cut it right out of the whole health picture, never bring it up, or discuss “moderation.” So does that mean you only get moderately poisoned? Who exactly practices moderation, anyway? Studies say most people really don’t. The effects of alcohol on the human body is something I share with EVERYONE in my sessions, take it or leave it. And, YES, of course studies exist that show alcohol is heart healthy and has benefits…..especially (or only?) when it comes to RED WINE. Well, take a seat, please. If you’re a red wine drinker, things are about to get REAL. A juicy New York Times article that came out on the weekend has traced the current history of red wine’s rise to the top of the health pyramid in North America, and then strongly argues that, today, decades after the big red wine is great for heart health boom, red wine’s health halo has started to FADE. This article is EYE OPENING. It dives into how our understanding of alcohol and health has evolved since it was considered heart healthy, with evidence backed by absolutely fascinating research studies (although not surprising results if you’ve ever been close to a heavy drinker or alcoholic, you’ll say these health results are all obvious.) So, where the possibility that a glass or two of red wine could benefit the heart existed in the past, and fit in with the larger body of evidence in the 1990s that linked alcohol to good health… Things have changed. “No amount of alcohol is safe, the W.H.O. and other health agencies have said, regardless of whether you’re drinking wine, beer or liquor.” It does say that the research results upset a lot of people. Learning that even moderate drinking, like one per day, is not beneficial, really upsets people. So, if you’re upset, that’s normal. This can be really hard to hear. And I am sharing this because I want you to be informed about the risk. Drinking a glass of red wine. does not help your heart in any way. Worth the read, everyone! (I won’t go on and on about it). Who’s the person that wrote it, you might wonder (as librarians like I do): Alice Callahan is a Times reporter covering nutrition and health. She has a Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of California, Davis, has taught in academia, written a book, raises chickens, and more. More about her HERE. So what do you do if you love wine but don’t want to suffer the consequences? Enter – delicious, elegant, non alcoholic beverages! If you’re in NYC, you should definitely eat and drink at Eleven Madison Park when you go out or have something special to celebrate! They offer a non-alcoholic version of pretty much everything, including their Vermouth (although I honestly don’t know what Vermouth is). You do not need to be drinking still water, you guys! 🎼🎵🎶 Baby, I got OPTIONS!! 🎼🎵🎶 If you’re in Bermuda, speak to mixologist, Ryan Gibbons. Tell him I sent you for one of his Zero-Proof Cocktails. You can also order non alcoholic beer in restaurants, and sometimes wine and you can definitely ask for a virgin mojito! My favourite! (I even ask for honey instead of sugar to really FUEL it up!) If you’re in Canada, every liquor store offers non-alcoholic wines, sparkling wines, beer (my favourite is the Organic Session IPA by Sober Carpenter from Whole Foods), and even liquors. If you’d like to quit drinking all alcohol until July 1st, 2024, let me know! Just reply to this email. I might form a little, free, informal, FUELLED ‘Sober ’til Summer’ group where we can do it together. |
