As you know, this past Monday we celebrated International Women’s Day. ⭐

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity, and, on this day and week, significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.

And of course, it is also a special day to express the love, respect and appreciation you have for all of the women in your life. 🌷

I know I would not be the woman I am today if it wasn’t for the women I’ve known in my life, or those whom I’ve learned from from a distance – like Oprah Winfrey.

Years ago I listened to Oprah speak on the difference between a job, a career and a calling, and that one lesson fundamentally changed the direction of my life.

She preceded her discussion by saying: “Your real job in life is to figure out what it is you are called to do…” and those words really got into my soul…and that, in turn, caused a huge shift! I realized that I had had a few jobs, I had an exciting and world-class career, and I finally listened in and decided to do – to really do – my calling (in a whole other industry!). Thank You Oprah for that distinction.

Maybe it’s something for you to think about too.

OPRAH WINFREY: TURN YOUR WOUNDS INTO WISDOM

Oprah Winfrey was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage single mother. When she was 14 years old, she became pregnant with a son who was born prematurely and died in infancy. Safe to say, she had a difficult childhood.

Despite her uneasy youth, she pursued her dreams of going into media and began working at a radio show. During this time, she was told that she didn’t have the face for television and should stay in radio instead. But she persisted. By age 19, she was a co-anchor for the local evening news. This led her to transfer into the daytime talk show arena, where she was able to boost a third-rated local Chicago talk show to first place – giving her the ability to launch her own production company, Harpo.

The Oprah Winfrey Show was the highest-rated television program of its kind in history and was
nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011. Millions tuned in every day to get guidance, information, and inspiration from Oprah and her guests.

Oprah was the richest African American of the 20th century, and North America’s first black multi-billionaire. She has also been ranked the greatest black philanthropist in American history. CNN and Time have dubbed her “the world’s most powerful woman.” Vanity Fair wrote, “Oprah Winfrey arguably has more influence on the culture than any university president, politician, or religious leader, except perhaps the Pope.”

In fact, the power of Winfrey’s opinions and endorsement to influence public option has been dubbed “the Oprah Effect,” and influences everything from book sales to election voting.
